Toys, toys and more toys!

Do you have room to play?

If you are not so fortunate to have a separate space for a play room then the 6-week summer holidays can hammer home how the younger members of the family can take over the house.

Toys, toys and more toys!  In our house, they are everywhere… I swear they multiply overnight. They are everywhere, in the living room (obviously), in the dining area, in the kitchen, hallway, and bedrooms… much to my frustration they even make it into the down stairs loo.

Something on the side?

24 May 2016 13:00:00

waverly sideboardTraditionally defined as “a flat-topped piece of furniture with cupboards and drawers, used for storing crockery, glasses, and table linen”, in my opinion the humble sideboard can be soooooooo much more!

According to the ever useful Wikapedia the sideboard as we know it made its first appearance in the 18th century, but they gained most of their popularity during the Chamber pot in sideboard19th century as households became prosperous enough to dedicate a room solely to dining. Apparently I have also read that many vintage sideboards have shallow drawers to store napkins, and often a small cupboard, which was used to keep a chamber pot out of sight (gross as it may sound in those times, gentlemen could use the chamber pots, without having to excuse themselves from the dining room or table – hopefully after the ladies had left the room!!).

Is your Hallway just a walk through?

The hallway of our home (or to be traditional about it - the Entrance Hall) has over the decades diminished in size as space becomes more of a premium. In London there are so called flats that you could easily cram into a generous hallway – So prorata the average hallway has come down in size.

If your house is anything like mine then you have the usual raft of coats, shoes, wellie boots, school bags and stuff (Usually things waiting to go upstairs on my next trip of the day) hanging about.

According to statistics 1 in 6 of us now work from home at least part of the week. For me as a Mum with young children sometimes working from home can be a godsend and hell at the same time… all those little jobs that need doing such as emptying the dishwasher or hanging out the washing can be fitted into the time I would normally spend driving to and from work which is great, but having no real desk or work space means I am camping on the dining room table which is not ideal. Working from home on a regular basis means creating the perfect home office space:
